A Repair Cafe is a monthly free, open community event aiming to divert items from landfill, pass on valuable repairing knowledge, and connect community. Knives need sharpening? Electrical item not working? pruning shears stuck or just need a new screw in a pair of glasses. A repair cafe may be just what you want. How did they begin? In 2009, Martine Postma, a Dutch journalist with an interest in driving local-level sustainability, introduced the Repair Café in Amsterdam. On 18 October 2009, the first Repair Café was held at Fijnhout Theater, Amsterdam-West and now over 1,500 voluntary groups organise them worldwide under this brand.
