Do you have opinions about our legal system?
Club members welcomed Stephen Pallaras KC to speak to members about his career and ideas for changes to our justice system. Stephen answered questions from members during the evening.

Stephen Pallaras was South Australia's Director of Public Prosecutions (2005-2012), where he prosecuted some of the state’s most notorious criminals.

Internationally, he was involved in bringing some of the biggest global Fraud and Drug King Pins to trial. In a single year, he successfully prosecuted 11 murder cases, has a solid record of not having lost a major case and won against the famous F Lee Bailey (OJ Simpson case) in the USA.

His many commendations for excellence come from agencies including the US Department of Justice, the US Drug Enforcement Agency DEA, The Federal Police of the Netherlands and the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department.

In short, Stephen is one of the most experienced criminal lawyers in Australia.

Internationally, he has also held the position of Executive Committee Member of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Agencies and was Vice President of the International Association of Prosecutors.

An anti-corruption advocate, he has been engaged to address Parliamentarians in Fiji, Vanuatu, Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, and as an anti-domestic-violence and women’s rights advocate, he has been the keynote speaker to the United Nations on International Women's Day.

Stephen has also held various positions: Adjunct Professor of Law (University of South Australia), Judge (Solomon Islands), Consultant (Secretariat of the Pacific Community, UNDP), Lecturer (Zhongnan University, Beijing University), Vice President (IAP), and Member (IAACA).

What is IDAHOBIT and how does it affect me?
Rotary has a role to play in addressing discrimination wherever it occurs.
IDAHOBIT stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia. It is celebrated annually on May 17th and aims to raise awareness and combat discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community globally. This day is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equal rights and respect for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

President Phil and Marion from the Rotary Community Team spoke to students at Christies Beach High School and encouraged them to respond on a coloured note about how they would stand firm against discrimination on IDAHOBIT Day at the school.
The day also gave students the opportunity to talk to a person from a different generation about what discrimination was like in their day.

Having fun with Rotary
Rotary Club members often take part in the events hosted by other Rotary Clubs. Cheryl, Marion, Dini and Merilyn battled with the others to win prizes at the latest quiz night conducted by the Rotary Club of Seaford. Proceeds from the night went towards providing household tanks for villages in Bali.
Whilst we didn't win the knowledge tests we did creditably well and came home with the last place prize [a carton of Allens party mix lollies], some silent auction bargains and a raffle prize.
Two Seaford Rotary members joined us with Marcus [our token male] representing the 'Pink Panthers' in the 'Rock, paper scissors' championship.
TV personality and comedian Jono was our quizmaster and had everyone focused throughout the evening.
Well done Seaford Rotary for another excellent event.

We WOWed them
Members wore ORANGE to our recent meeting in recognition of the work our wonderful State Emergency Service volunteers do.
Very timely as the weather threw a tantrum over the weekend.
Thank you SES volunteers for braving whatever the day brings to help others in our community.
